Whether or not you allow your kids to participate in Halloween, November 1st can feel like a real let down for some kids. But it shouldn't! It's a feast day, a celebration, and a party is a great way to show it!
If you have never been to an All Saints Day party, then planning one can be intimidating. Here's some advice!
Saints are patrons of something - accountants, animals, children, learning, teachers. When you choose a saint, it's easy to center your party theme around whatever the saint is patron of. You can also use the saints occupation (often the same thing).
Whether it's a show, movie, or book you could start the party with a story of the Saint's life.
If your kiddos have never really learned about the saints, try starting off by introducing them to the disciples. Then, you can explain to them that the disciples are now in Heaven and are known as saints.
Most saints had some sort of occupation which could inspire crafts and snacks. Perhaps your saint was a fisherman. You could try making fish, eating goldfish crackers, decorating a fishing net with toy fish.
Some crafts are difficult for little ones with limited dexterity, so be sure to have adults ready to help.
Maybe your saint was the patron saint of animals from Italy. You could have animal crackers, create a stuffed animal, or string together a necklace with animal shaped beads. Or, get some Italian snacks.
You could also choose a snack from the saints' home country.
Games - with prizes - are a great idea for a super fun kids party. Think about games that are related to the saints' occupation or from the saints' birthplace. This is a great way learn about different cultures, time periods of history, and learning that God's people exist in all places and in all times.
If you think you might plan to do an All Saints party annually, you might want to introduce a different saint every year. But, you could plan a few activities to repeat. Like, a guess-how-many-the-jar game.
Costumes might be something to consider, but aren't really an essential part of an All Saints Day party. Having said that, if your saint had a really cool or unique occupation, you might want to encourage costumes or bring a dress-up box. If nothing else, you could make halos or diadems for kids to wear in place of a party hat.
